Jack and Jill in this books are rabbits.as most of the characters are. I was looking for the more traditional Mother Goose rhymes. The quality of the book as far as illustrations and print.is good, however, I wish I had reviewed my choice closer. And someone else has pointed out.a lot of the words in the rhymes certainly do not match the old "Childcraft" nursery rhymes that I was looking for. The illustrations just did not match my memory of the traditional pictures from my childhood. Humpty Dumpty was actually just a small egg in these pictures.I remember a big egg wearing clothes and having arms and legs sitting on wall. I had a hard time keeping my 15 mo old grandson interested in this book. The vendor was prompt in the delivery and description.I do not fault him for my poor selection.
Some of the hits are Baa,baa black sheep, Big Ship Sails -Alley alley, oh, The Grand Old Duke of York and Down By the Station. It may be titles Very First Mother Goose, it really is the very best. Wells and Opie have teamed up for the most engaging selection of rhymes and illustrations.My two grandchildren have thrived on this in early language acquisition. Even before age one, each was mesmerized and engaged in the entire reading of the book. Some selections were even requested with "More" hand sign.
I was drawn to this book immediately because I grew up reading Rosemary Wells books and I love nursery rhymes. The pictures are large, bright and funny, but the words are also very compelling to my little girl. The drawings are charming and humorous to adults, and they depict many things that toddlers love (hens, moons, sheep, cows, etc), so she points out everything.
She asks for the "goose book" every day. She will now say the last word of many lines when I pause at the end of them. I never imagined that my 18 month old daughter would become obsessed with it.
But the best part is that she is the language that she is learning. I can't believe how it holds her attention, when she is normally a very active toddler and has a hard time sitting for most books. She will let me read the whole book to her each day.
I was shocked. It is hands down the best baby book I have purchased so far and will be a gift that I give to many others.
She already loves books. Book was received very quickly. My Grandbaby, Alli, had her 1st birthday on the 14th and it was one of her favorite gifts. I would order form this seller again. Great transaction.
We have more than a few editions of Mother Goose, but this is the one that we go to every time. There is nothing left of our first copy. We are purchasing our second copy of this book for our fifth child. It is a nice big picture book, which means many can enjoy it together. We read it again and again until it completely fell apart. Iona has picked the most charming rhymes of Mother Goose and the illustrations are not only beautiful, but imaginative and engaging. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Absolutely lovely.
